YMCA helps Woman with Macular Degeneration

"Yesterday, I spoke with a woman who was a former secretary at JPL. She is only 53, and is experiencing sight loss due to Macular degeneration. She has no health insurance, her state disability is about to run out, and her rental home in La Canada is being sold. She is single and has no children. Her mother and brother are helping her with the cost of the treatments, but their help may be short lived as her mother is beginning to show signs of dementia, and her brother has a multitude of health problems”. Nancy Turney, Director of Community Senior Services

In 2006, the YMCA supported by private donations, the City of La Cañada Flintridge, and by a grant from the Glendale Community Foundation established the Community Senior Service Program. The programs’ mission is to identify, develop, coordinate and provide services to meet the needs of seniors and their families in the Foothills. Nancy Turney, a social worker specializing in gerontology, was hired by the YMCA to lead our efforts to support all members of the community who are experiencing the challenges of aging. Whether it is a spouse, a single adult or a concerned family member, Nancy is here to help!

Nancy was able to provide the woman we just spoke about with much needed information and education on Medicare, MediCal, senior housing options and patient assistance programs to pay for her injections. She assisted with her move to a friends home, educated her on Special Needs Trust and continues to be a source of information and support.

The YMCAs’ Community Senior Service Program is funded by gifts to our Annual Community Support Campaign, through grants and other private donations. This important program would cease to exist without your gifts. For more information on this program contact Nancy at (818) 790-0123 ext. 225 or nturney@ymcafoothills.org. If you are interested in making a gift to the program, please contact Rick Dennis, Director of Development at (818) 790-0123 ext. 219 or rdennis@ymcafoothills.org.
