The Verdugo Hills Family YMCA and Mountain View Elementary School PTA have entered into a collaboration that is providing the schools 450 students with 1 period of physical education each week. This program would not be possible without the generous donation of $15,000 by the Capital Group Companies Foundation, and the support of the Mountain View PTA for the 2009/2010 school year.
Providing age appropriate curriculum, based upon the CA State Framework for Physical Education, this program teaches fundamental motor skills needed to maintain a positive outlook on physical activity. The US Surgeon General advises students who “participate in physical education are more likely to become healthy adults who are motivated to remain healthy and active throughout their lives".
Physical education improves self-esteem and self worth, and encourages children to enjoy physical activity. The parents and school staff agree the children engaged in this program have made dramatic improvements in their motor skills and social interaction with their peers in just a few months of weekly PE classes provided by the YMCA. Mountain View Principal Beth Harker adds, “The YMCA PE program has already had a positive impact on our students. They are developing lifelong positive habits and learning great sportsmanship all while having fun!”
For 150 years, YMCAs have taught children and adults how to lead healthier lives. Today, as the leading charitable organization in the foothills, the Crescenta - Canada and Verdugo Hills Family YMCAs strive to bring health and wellness to all, especially to those who are in the most need. We are thankful to the Capital Group Companies Foundation and the dedicated PTA Parents at Mountain View Elementary for allowing the YMCA to bring health and well-being to the students of Mountain View Elementary School in Tujunga.
